PSA

Friends...
You do breast self-exams on a regular basis, right? RIGHT?? Please, please do. Here are instructions: http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/About-Breast-Cancer/Breast-Self-Exam.aspx

I almost never bothered to do self-exams. And it makes me wonder how long my lump would have gone undetected, since I also had no reason to start getting routine mammograms for several more years.

  1. And to all my queer friends- i know you don't usually go to the gyno as often as your bi/straight counterparts who rely on birth control (hey, I HAVE to go once a year!) In fact i know 25 year old lesbians who have never had a pap...

I know it's gross... but PLEASE go- not just for the cervical cancer check but also for the breast exam! I DO self exams regularly and i had a lump i missed that my doctor found! It is just a cyst, but what if it wasn't? it was so tiny i'd have never found it on my own. Having a highly trained set of hands check you out once in a while is not a bad thing.

(there ARE really great female gynocologists out there too. Mine is fantastic :). Ask around and get recommendations from friends.)

  2. Thanks, Steph! You are so right about all of this! I was about 26 before I relented and went for my first gyno visit... EEK.
